Lil’ refresher: Between 1886 and 1924, almost 14 million immigrants entered the United States through New York. The Statue of Liberty was a reassuring sign that they had arrived in the land of their dreams. … In 1883, Lazarus donated her poem, “The New Colossus,” to an auction raising funds for the construction of the Statue’s pedestal: “Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” I captured this image when I took my mother to Ellis Island to walk in the footsteps of my grandfather who came over from Greece as an infant. We were overcome by many emotions – anger at the current racist criminal taking the White House hostage, and gratitude for the acceptance my grandfather experienced upon entering this country – for which if it wasn’t for this welcome my mom and I would not be here. Walking in those footsteps was powerful and it is the overwhelming good in our global humanity that easily “trumps” hate. We push forward to our dreams in the meantime. All my respect goes to the wisdom, courage and strength of the intelligent female leadership growing in our country across government as well as the amazing fellow female founders, businesswomen and creators I call friends. #onwardwego #battlecry #spreadlove #shine #AmericatheBeautiful #humanity #thislandismadeforyouandme #statueofliberty #usa #EllisIsland #bigrespect #follow & support all of the women in your life & United States House of Representatives Ilhan Omar @ilhanmn Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna S. Pressley!
